A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE Bey Hamam

Bey Hamam, known to this day also as Paradise Baths, is located on Egnatia Street, at the NE corner of Aristotle’s Square, to the south of Arhaia Agora (Forum), where once stood the Byzantine Megaloforos, in close proximity to the Byzantine church of Panagia Chalkeon and the copper-workers neighborhood. It was named after the honorary title (Bey) of the Sultan and is the first bathhouse built (1444) immediately after the city was conquered by the Ottomans. It is also the largest double bathhouse in Greece, featuring independent sections for men and women.
