A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE Eptapyrgio Genti Koule

The Eptapyrgio stands at the highest point of the Acropolis, located on the NE corner of the city walls. It features sections from different construction phases, from the early Christian and Byzantine period until the era of Ottoman rule. The latest additions are the buildings and auxiliary areas built when it was converted to a prison in the 19th century. The final phase of its development took place in the late 1990s, when mild interventions and necessary changes were made in order to accommodate the offices of the 9th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. The name Eptapyrgio was probably inspired during the Ottoman era by the corresponding Fortress of Seven Towers (Yedi Kule) of the 15^th century in Istanbul.
