“REFERENCE | REPRESENTATION”

Within the framework of Zone D by Zoumboulakis Galleries, the group exhibition “Reference | Representation”, curated by visual artists Vassilis Vassilakakis, Christos Venetis, Vangelis Gokas and Kostas Christopoulos, opens on 22 September.

The exhibition, in which 24 artists participate, is held in the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki as a “guest event” of the 3^rd Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art.

 The works placed among the exhibits-testimonies of the museum make an attempt to pose questions concerning the notions of “reference” and that of “representation”. The aforementioned notions frame a pivotal issue of negotiation in various civilizations with most prominent being the Jewish one. Meanwhile, considering these notions has always been accompanied, in the course of history, by fluctuations which affect art and its works.

Kostas Christopoulos notes: “What is at stake here is memory management. Contemporary civilization is associated precisely with the ability of management and attention to any kind of data as well as with the possibility of their reorientation. Memories, images, objects of tradition, works of art, symbols, narrations fragments and historical data are reorganized in a way that can place in the centre of interest the question of re-meditation on the understanding of the contemporary cultural matters of contestation and situate them in the perspective of renegotiation of the question on the possibility or the impossibility of their representation”.

 A bilingual (greek/english) special edition will be published by FUTURA Editions within the context of the exhibition, including the works exhibited, accompanied by various texts written by Antaloudaki Anna, Artinos Apostolis, Christopoulos Kostas, Dermentzopoulos Christos, Dimitriadis Dimitris, Koumbis Takis, Marinos Christopher, Mertikas George, Molho Rena, Pateridou Georgia, Rikou Elpida, Rozanis Stefanos, Solomon Esther, Stanganellis Petros-Iossif, Stafilakis Kostis, Yoka Lia.
